The dark comedy One Battle After Another has claimed nine Golden Globe nominations, making Leonardo DiCaprio’s thriller an early frontrunner for the Oscars.
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, the film features DiCaprio as a faded revolutionary who leaps into action to save his daughter. Competing for best movie musical or comedy, it will face off against Marty Supreme and Bugonia, among others. The Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value secured eight nominations, slightly ahead of the supernatural horror film Sinners with seven.
Both films are contenders for the drama prize, alongside Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein and Hamnet, a tale about Shakespeare’s family. “Frankenstein is a film I’ve longed to create, and being recognized in this manner means a lot,” stated del Toro.

DiCaprio, along with One Battle co-stars Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, and Teyana Taylor, received acting nominations, with Taylor expressing her “speechless and teary-eyed” reaction.
George Clooney and Adam Sandler were acknowledged for Jay Kelly, as were Dwayne Johnson for The Smashing Machine and Jessie Buckley for Hamnet.
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were nominated for their roles in Wicked: For Good, though the second part of Universal Pictures’ The Wizard of Oz prequel didn’t make the musical or comedy shortlist. The Globes, one of the first Hollywood awards preceding the Oscars in March, will air on January 11.

INTERNATIONAL FILMS RECOGNIZED
The Globes’ voters, entertainment journalists worldwide, displayed their appreciation for non-Hollywood films, noted Debra Birnbaum, editor of Gold Derby.
Apart from Sentimental Value, the Iranian thriller It Was Just an Accident by Jafar Panahi and Brazilian drama The Secret Agent were nominated.
“The standout surprise is the strong presence of international films,” Birnbaum observed. “These films are expected to capture attention not just at the Golden Globes but throughout the awards season.”
In a new podcast category, nominations went to Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, Call Her Daddy, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, The Mel Robbins Podcast, Smartless, and NPR’s Up First.
HBO’s mystery series The White Lotus led TV categories with six nominations, surpassing Netflix’s limited series Adolescence, about a 13-year-old accused of murder.
Netflix, aiming to reshape Hollywood by acquiring TV, film, and streaming assets, including HBO from Warner Bros Discovery, topped networks with 22 TV nominations. On Monday, Paramount Skydance made a bid for Warner Bros Discovery.

Golden Globe winners are selected by over 300 entertainment journalists, unlike the approximately 9,000 Oscar voters. The Globes expanded their voting body and enacted reforms following criticisms over ethics and diversity.
Comedian Nikki Glaser will once again host the Globes ceremony, which will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.
