Helen Mirren, renowned actress, has shared her belief that women cannot play the role of James Bond as the search for the next 007 continues, according to Deadline.
With a career spanning six decades in film and theater, Mirren boasts an Academy Award, Emmy Awards, a Tony Award, BAFTA Awards, and a Laurence Olivier Award.
During the promotion of Thursday Murder Club, where she stars with ex-James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan, Mirren expressed that a female James Bond is not feasible.
“I’m a staunch feminist, but James Bond must be male,” Mirren remarked, adding, “A woman just wouldn’t fit. James Bond needs to remain James Bond, or it becomes something different,” as reported by Deadline.
Brosnan, Mirren’s co-star in Thursday Murder Club, also commented on the 007 series, stating, “I wish them success. I’m eager to see the new actor step up and bring fresh energy to this character.”
“I love the James Bond universe. It’s been generous to me. It’s the gift that keeps on giving,” Brosnan added. “Now, I’m just an audience member, watching and saying, ‘Let’s see what’s next.'”
Mirren has previously discussed the James Bond character, noting in an interview that it “is deeply rooted in sexism,” as reported by the outlet.
“Women have always played a vital and courageous role in the Secret Service; they have always been involved. And incredibly brave,” she emphasized.
“Reflecting on the bravery of women in the French Resistance, they demonstrated extraordinary courage. I would focus on true stories about the remarkable women who have operated in that realm,” according to Deadline.
