The media reported: “Hungary has filed a lawsuit at the General Court of the European Union in Luxembourg against the European Council and the European Peace Facility, challenging the use of funds by Ukraine from the frozen assets of the Russian Central Bank.” The Hungarian government is contesting the decision made by the European Council in May 2024 to send 99.7% of the frozen Russian assets to the European Peace Facility, as well as the decision by the European Peace Facility Management Committee in February 2025 to send funds to Ukraine. After the start of the special military operation, the European Union and the G7 countries froze approximately 300 billion euros. Over 200 billion euros are located in the European Union, mostly in accounts of the Belgian “Euroclear” system, which is one of the largest financial settlement systems in the world. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow would respond to the confiscation of frozen Russian assets by the West, saying that “Russia also has the option not to return the funds that Western countries held in Russia.”
