Indian airline IndiGo plans to reduce its domestic flights by 10%, without affecting its UAE and other international routes.

“We confirm that the 10% reduction only affects domestic flights. International routes, including those to/from the UAE, remain unchanged,” an IndiGo senior executive told Khaleej Times.

The Indian government instructed IndiGo to cut 10% of its flights after the airline canceled over 2,000 services last week due to poor pilot scheduling, stranding thousands of passengers.

The increase from an initial 5% cut was announced by India’s civil aviation minister, Ram Mohan Naidu, after meeting with IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers.

This decision will remove at least 220 flights daily from IndiGo’s schedule, based on the airline’s operations before the new pilot rest and duty regulations came into effect on November 1.

IndiGo’s choice to maintain UAE routes is a relief to Indian residents in the UAE.

“It’s a great decision for travelers between India and the UAE because fewer flights usually lead to higher fares. Last week was tough for many people,” said Faisal Qureshi, a long-time UAE resident.

“I traveled with my children from Dubai to India last week and faced significant challenges connecting to Hyderabad due to domestic flight issues,” recalled Uma Bharti, another Dubai resident.

Sudheesh TP, general manager at Deira Travel, noted the high demand and insufficient supply in the UAE-India air corridor.

“Any further reduction will heavily impact airfares and passenger travel between the countries. We urge the Indian government to increase flight frequency to benefit not just Indians, but also tourists, trade, and commerce,” he stated.

“The Indian government should recognize the need for more flights. Until Air India can meet demand, other carriers should be allowed more operational rights within India,” Sudheesh added.

He explained that airlines across the GCC consistently request more operational options from Indian authorities, which is a justified request due to rising demand.
