The Secretary-General of the Popular Current Party (Nationalist), Zouhair Hamdi, stated on Wednesday that 8 members of the party have been on a hunger strike since last Sunday at the party’s headquarters in the capital, Tunis, in solidarity with the people of the besieged Gaza Strip.

Hamdi added, “After nearly two years of continuous warfare waged by the Israeli army against the defenseless people of Gaza, and in full view of the world, today they are enacting a new policy: killing through starvation and cutting off medicine and food.”

He continued, “This is a crime against humanity, and the international community and UN institutions have resigned from playing their role in the face of these crimes.”

The Secretary-General of the Popular Current Party explained that “this struggle and solidarity movement is so that we do not let our people in Gaza starve and thirst alone, and it is also part of the global movement supporting Gaza.”

He clarified that “the hunger strike will continue and other figures and supporters may join in the coming period,” calling on “all free people of the world to escalate protests to save humanity and stop the war and starvation in Gaza.”

The residents suffer from unprecedented levels of hunger, with UN organizations warning of the spread of famine and rising death tolls due to malnutrition, especially among children, the sick, and people with disabilities.

From October 7, 2023, to August 28, the ongoing war on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of about 63,000 Palestinians and approximately 160,000 injuries, according to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza.
