Dr. Trisha Satya Basricha, a senior researcher and gastroenterologist at a Boston medical center, explained that modern lifestyle and usage impact human health in unexpected ways, according to a study published in the journal ‘PLOS One’ and reported by ‘Medical News’. Basricha and her team conducted a survey involving 125 participants who underwent endoscopy, where it was found that more than 40% of them suffer from hemorrhoids. Additionally, 93% reported using their phones in the toilet at least once a week. Many participants indicated that their toilet sitting time exceeds 6 minutes per visit, confirming that smartphones are the main reason for extending this duration.

She explained that using screens at night disrupts sleep, and having phones at the dinner table negatively affects family communication, adding that “bathroom usage habits also seem unsafe.” The study highlights the need to increase awareness of the effects of smartphones on health, especially in unexpected contexts like toilet use. The study calls for re-evaluating these habits to avoid long-term health issues caused by prolonged sitting and excessive pressure.
