India-Russia Oil Relations and Strategic Partnerships

Trump told reporters, “We have a very good relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will not be buying a lot of oil from Russia… And as you know, they will not be buying a lot of oil; they have already significantly reduced their imports and continue to reduce them.” Earlier, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified in response to US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding India’s purchases of Russian oil, saying, “India, as a major oil and gas import country, prioritizes protecting its citizens’ interests against energy market fluctuations as a fundamental priority. Our import strategy entirely depends on this principle, aiming to maintain cost stability and reliable supply availability. This includes expanding the supplier base and diversifying options according to global market dynamics.” Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier noted that relations between Russia and India are characterized by trust and friendship. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his meeting with President Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit, stated, “India is looking forward to your visit in December, and close cooperation between our countries is essential for ensuring global stability and prosperity.” Earlier last month, the Indian Prime Minister declared that his country is committed to continuing to enhance its special and distinguished strategic partnership with Russia, affirming that “India is ready to contribute to efforts to reach a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.”
