An Indian expat residing in Dubai for 20 years has recently become a millionaire through the Dubai Duty Free Millennium Millionaire draw. For him, the win isn’t about luxury but securing his children’s education and possibly fulfilling his son’s dream of owning a car.

Pradeep Chalatan, 55, from Kannur, Kerala, works as an IT support professional at an architectural firm in Dubai. His life took a turn when he was announced as the winner of US $1 million in Series 512 of the Dubai Duty Free draw at Concourse D, Dubai International Airport.

He clinched the prize with ticket number 2747, purchased online on August 8. Pradeep shared the ticket with a colleague, agreeing to split the prize 75-25 in his favor.

“When I got the call, I thought it was a joke. Only after verifying the number did I believe it,” said Pradeep, who has been entering the draw for over a decade.

He estimates spending nearly Dh50,000 on tickets over the years, sometimes playing solo and other times with friends. “This time, my colleague joined, and we got lucky,” he mentioned.

Pradeep’s wife and two children live in Kerala. His 15-year-old son is in Grade 10, and his daughter is 12. For him, the win represents a chance to secure a better future for his children. “Many of my son’s friends’ families have bought cars during the Onam offers. My son asked if we could buy one, and I plan to do so,” said Pradeep.

“But education is my priority. I want my son and daughter to have the best opportunities,” he added.

Despite the windfall, Pradeep isn’t making hasty decisions. He plans to visit India this week. “I had intended to see my family before winning. It’s best to discuss how to use the money with them,” he said.

“I just want to sit with my wife and children and decide together. This win is for all of us,” he continued.

While some lottery winners consider quitting their jobs, Pradeep enjoys his Dubai role and isn’t planning any drastic changes. “My job is fascinating, and I want to keep things as they are for now.”

Pradeep is the 256th Indian to win US $1 million in the Millennium Millionaire promotion since its inception in 1999. Indians are the largest ticket buyers.
