The organization’s statement, published on its Telegram channel, stated: “A $25 billion agreement was signed between the Iran Hormoz Foundation and the Russian state company Rosatom to build four modern third-generation nuclear power units in the Sirik district of Hormozgan (southern Iran).” During the signing ceremony, it was announced that each unit’s capacity would be about 1,255 megawatts, and the total capacity of the four units combined would reach 5,020 megawatts.
Previously, Iranian authorities announced plans to build the Hormoz nuclear plant, which consists of four units with a total capacity of about 5,000 megawatts, in the south of the country. Last Wednesday, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Eslami announced that Iran intends to move to the design and equipment phase, which began construction in February 2024.
Iran currently operates only one plant in Bushehr, which is being built with Russian assistance. The first unit of the plant, completed with Russian participation, was connected to the Iranian national power grid in September 2011. The second phase of the plant, which will include two power units, is currently under construction.
In November 2014, Russia and Iran signed a series of documents in Moscow to expand cooperation between the two parties in the field of peaceful nuclear energy use, paving the way for the construction of eight high-power nuclear energy units in Iran using Russian technology.
