This came during a phone call between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the foreign ministers of the three European countries, along with the High Representative of the European Union, Kaia Kallas. During the call, Iran’s positions on the so-called ‘Snapback’ sanctions activation mechanism and the responsibility of the three European countries and the European Union in this regard were explained, according to Iranian news agency ‘IRNA.’ The Iranian Foreign Minister affirmed that Tehran has never abandoned the path of diplomacy, acts firmly and decisively in self-defense, and is ready for any diplomatic solution that ensures the rights and interests of the Iranian people.

In response to the repeated European parties’ idea of extending Resolution 2231 to allow more time for diplomacy, Araghchi stated that this is a decision that must be made by the United Nations Security Council; Iran has no role in this process, although it has its principled positions and opinions on this issue. For their part, the three European countries and the High Representative of the European Union once again confirmed during the phone conversation with the Iranian Foreign Minister their readiness to find a diplomatic solution, according to the ‘IRNA’ agency.

Last July, meetings were held between the Deputy Foreign Ministers of Iran and the ‘European Troika’ (the UK, France, and Germany), as part of completing previous consultations on the Iranian nuclear file. Majid Takht Ravanchi, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, pointed out that recent developments, including what he described as ‘Israeli and American aggression’ against Iran, were strongly present in the discussions, adding that his country considered these attacks as ‘violations of international law and the United Nations Charter,’ and criticized the positions of European countries towards these events. He added that ‘the meeting addressed the issue of re-imposing sanctions and the activation mechanism,’ with the Iranian delegation expressing its rejection of these moves, emphasizing that the European countries do not have a legal basis for such measures.
