Iran Rejects Sanction Re-imposition as Illegal

This morning, Sunday, ISNA reported that Ghalibaf stated that the sanctions stipulated in the decision “are not of significant importance when compared to U.S. sanctions, the illegality of using the ‘snapback mechanism’, and the belief of Russia and China that the implementation of sanction decisions faces significant legal obstacles.” Ghalibaf explained during a session of the Iranian parliament that his country considers the application of ‘snapback’ decisions and ‘re-imposition of sanctions’ illegal, and does not see itself obligated to comply with these illegal decisions, including the suspension of enrichment.

In a related context, the U.S. Secretary of State called on Iran today, Sunday, to enter into direct negotiations regarding the nuclear agreement, following the announcement by the European troika countries (France, the UK, and Germany) of the re-imposition of sanctions on Tehran.

Britain, France, and Germany informed the United Nations Security Council today, Sunday, about the sanctions that were lifted under the nuclear agreement signed in 2015. The sanctions, imposed two months after Israeli and American strikes on Iran, prohibit any dealings related to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, but they are likely to have a broader impact on an economy facing escalating challenges.
