A statement issued by the minister’s media office mentioned that Fadel, accompanied by an official delegation, will discuss with Iranian officials ways to ensure the continued flow of gas to operate Iraqi power stations, according to Iraqi News Agency (INA). The statement pointed out that Iraq and Iran signed a contract to supply Iraq with about 55 million cubic meters of gas per day. However, the supplied quantities have decreased since last May, leading to the shutdown of several stations and a reduction in power supply hours.
The visit of the Iraqi Minister of Electricity to Iran comes amidst a severe heatwave in the country and the approaching Arbaeen pilgrimage, which necessitates enhancing the stability of the electrical system and providing the necessary fuel to ensure continuous service for citizens and visitors.
For years, Iraq has been importing gas from Iran to operate electricity production stations, especially in the southern provinces. However, it faces difficulties in paying for these imports due to US sanctions imposed on Tehran, which restrict financial transactions in dollars.
