Iraq-Iran Security Agreement and Relations

This was announced during a joint press conference in Tehran with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali, as reported by the Iraqi News Agency ‘INA’. Al-Araji emphasized Iraq’s full commitment to the security agreement signed with Iran last August, which focuses on security coordination to secure the shared borders.

He explained that Iraq has lodged an official complaint with the UN Security Council against Israel following its breach of Iraqi airspace to carry out military attacks, referring to an Israeli attack supported by the U.S. last June, which Tehran responded to with ballistic missiles and drones before a ceasefire was announced through U.S. mediation.

He noted that Iraq’s participation in the recent Sharm El-Sheikh summit aimed to stop attacks in Gaza, calling for adherence to the ceasefire agreement and preventing its violation. Meanwhile, Larijani confirmed that discussions with the Iraqi delegation involved enhancing security and economic relations between the two countries, pointing out that stable economic relations require strengthened security coordination.

Al-Araji arrived in Tehran on Monday, leading a high-ranking security delegation on an unannounced visit. The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, sponsored the signing of a joint security memorandum of understanding last August between the Iraqi National Security Advisor, Qasim Al-Araji, and the Secretary-General of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, concerning security coordination for the shared borders between the two countries.

The Iraqi Cabinet statement stated: ‘The Prime Minister, Mohammed, received the Secretary-General of the Iranian Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and his accompanying delegation.’ The statement added: ‘During the meeting, the Prime Minister affirmed Iraq’s keen pursuit to develop relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran and to enhance fruitful partnerships across various fields, benefiting both the Iraqi and Iranian people.’

The statement concluded: ‘The Prime Minister sponsored the signing of a joint security memorandum of understanding between the Iraqi National Security Advisor and Larijani concerning security coordination for the shared borders between the two countries.’
