In exclusive statements to ‘Sputnik,’ he said this step is an old Israeli dream that has been planned for a long time. They talk about this issue and want to destroy any possibility of establishing or achieving any kind of peace.
He explained that these continuous and ongoing movements might open the door to different forms of this long-standing conflict, which the region has been experiencing for more than a century.
Al-Habbash confirmed that these decisions fuel the fire of war and conflict with these racist and aggressive decisions, which contradict international law and destroy any possibility of implementing international law on Palestinian land.
Regarding the impact of this step on international efforts to start a political process, Al-Habbash emphasized that the government does not believe in any political process. They lie in wait for opportunities and, on the contrary, create reasons to close the door to any meaningful political process according to international law and legitimacy, which is dangerous and should be opposed by the entire world.
The Israeli Knesset approved, on Wednesday, in the preliminary reading, a bill under which Israeli sovereignty will be imposed on the West Bank. Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich commented, ‘Mr. Prime Minister, the Knesset has spoken, and the people have spoken. It’s time to impose full sovereignty over all of Judea and Samaria, and to push for peace agreements in exchange for peace with our neighbors from a position of strength.’
In the same context, Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar said, ‘The time for sovereignty is now.’
On July 23, the Knesset supported a proposal to annex the West Bank, with a majority of 71 out of a total of 120 deputies. This step was met with condemnation from the Palestinian presidency.
Earlier, American media reported that more than 40 Democratic members of the US Senate urged US President Donald Trump to strengthen his opposition to Israel’s plans to annex parts of the West Bank. Other Western media revealed last month that the President promised Arab leaders during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly not to allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to annex the West Bank.
