The highly anticipated sequel to Jailer, a massive hit starring superstar Rajinikanth, is expanding its star-studded cast. Bollywood icons Mithun Chakraborty and Vidya Balan are reportedly set to play pivotal roles in Jailer 2.

The original Jailer (2023) was a blockbuster, amassing over Rs 6 billion (approximately Dh250 million) worldwide. Rajinikanth portrayed Muthuvel Pandian, a retired officer drawn back into action following his son’s disappearance. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, the film included cameos by Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Jackie Shroff, earning both box office success and critical praise.

According to Deccan Herald, Vidya Balan has been involved with the production in Chennai for weeks and has already completed filming. She takes on a crucial role that significantly impacts the plot.

This marks Balan’s second Tamil film appearance, following the 2019 legal drama Nerkonda Paarvai, which was a remake of the Bollywood success Pink.

In addition, Mithun Chakraborty, a former Indian parliamentarian, is anticipated to have a significant role in Jailer 2, as reported by India Today. Known for hits like Disco Dancer (1982) and Agneepath (1990), this movie will introduce him to Tamil cinema alongside Nandamuri Balakrishna, Shiva Rajkumar, and SJ Suryah, plus original cast members Ramya Krishnan, Mirna Menon, and Yogi Babu.

Chakraborty and Rajinikanth have previously collaborated in films like Bhrastachar (1989) and Bhagya Debata (1997).

While Sun Pictures, led by Kalanithi Maran, hasn’t officially confirmed these casting details, Anna Reshma Rajan from Angamaly Diaries (2017) and acclaimed actor Suraj Venjaramoodu are also part of the cast.

Earlier, Sun Pictures teased Jailer 2 with a humorous trailer during the Pongal festival, hinting at a thrilling continuation of the original’s narrative.

Meanwhile, Rajinikanth’s Coolie has been a tremendous success, grossing about Rs 5.06 billion since its release on August 14, as per Sacnilk.

Jailer 2 is targeting an early 2026 release, though no official announcement has been made yet.
