Joe Caroff, the visionary graphic designer behind iconic creations like the 007 gun logo for James Bond, posters for West Side Story and A Hard Day’s Night, and typography for films like Last Tango in Paris and Manhattan, passed away on August 17 at the age of 103, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Caroff spent his final days in hospice care at his Manhattan home, his sons Peter and Michael shared with The New York Times.

Caroff’s innovative opening title sequences graced films such as Richard Attenborough’s A Bridge Too Far (1977), Volker Schlondorff’s Death of a Salesman (1985), Gene Saks’ Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), and Martin Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), featuring a crown of thorns.

His poster portfolio included works for Woody Allen films, and titles like Oh Dad, Poor Dad, Mamma’s Hung You in the Closet and I’m Feelin’ So Sad (1963), A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965), Too Late the Hero (1970), Tell Me That You Love Me, Junie Moon (1970), Cabaret (1972), An Unmarried Woman (1978), and Gandhi (1982).

Throughout his career, he worked on over 300 film campaigns. His first major assignment came when United Artists executive David Chasman hired him to create the poster for West Side Story (1961), later requesting a letterhead design for the Bond film Dr. No. Caroff recalled in 2021, “He asked for a decorative touch, and knowing Bond’s 007 designation, I saw the seven’s stem as a gun handle. It was instant creativity.”

Inspired by Ian Fleming’s favorite gun, the Walther PPK, Caroff added a barrel and trigger to the 007 design, earning $300 for the assignment, the standard rate then.

Though the logo, with minor tweaks, has appeared in every Bond film and countless merchandise, Caroff received no official credit or royalties, The Hollywood Reporter noted. However, he acknowledged it brought him significant business, acting as a promotional piece for his work.

Joseph Caroff was born on August 18, 1921, in Linden, New Jersey. He was one of six children, with a painter father who could transform plaster walls into wood-like surfaces.

He retired in 2006 at 86 to focus on painting.

Alongside his sons, Caroff’s legacy continues through his daughters-in-law, Ruth and Cynthia, and his granddaughter, Jennifer.

Despite years of oversight, Caroff was finally recognized by Bond producers with an Omega watch inscribed with 007 for his 100th birthday, courtesy of Barbara Broccoli, Michael G Wilson, and EON Productions, reported The Hollywood Reporter. ANI
