Jolie’s Emotional Journey in Refugee Camps

I found it difficult to discuss the situation without becoming emotional. I experienced a phase of complete hopelessness.

During her visit to the Oure Cassoni camp on the Chad-Darfur border in February, she encountered a troubled 7-year-old boy. His family had tied him to a pole to prevent him from wandering off or self-harming, as he had hidden in the bush for 48 hours after his village was bombed.

“I spent about half an hour talking to him, just observing him until he finally reached out to me,” Jolie shared with the magazine. “There was a little boy inside who was receptive to a kind voice.”

As a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie has visited camps in Africa, Pakistan, and Cambodia. She travels on commercial flights without an entourage and dismisses critics who label her efforts as celebrity tourism.

“I doubt anyone making such claims has spent the past six years visiting over 30 camps and truly engaging with the people,” Jolie stated, expressing her desire to return to Cambodia.
