The Embassy of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Russia stated, in remarks to the agency, that the introduction of a visa exemption system between Russia and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan will lead to an increase in the number of tourists from both sides, enhance tourism ties, cultural interaction, and economic activity. It will also allow Russian tourists to learn about Jordan’s historical heritage. The embassy’s statement read: “With the introduction of the visa exemption system, we already expect an increase in the number of tourists from both sides. The new agreement will facilitate Russian tourists’ acquaintance with Jordan and encourage more Jordanians to explore Russia, thus strengthening tourism ties, cultural interaction, and economic activity between the two countries.” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi had discussed the matter. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the flow of Russian tourists to Jordan reached record numbers; in 2019, about 62,000 Russian tourists visited the country, making the Russian market among the most important for Jordanian destinations. However, the numbers significantly declined after the pandemic, with only 24,000 Russians visiting Jordan in 2023, which is about three times less than pre-pandemic levels, though it represents a 50% increase compared to 2022.
