American media reported, citing documents submitted by Khalil’s lawyer to a federal court, that Judge Jamie Comans issued a deportation order despite a separate decision from a federal court that temporarily prevents his deportation while his case is under review.

Khalil’s lawyers confirmed their intention to appeal the deportation order before the Board of Immigration Appeals within the specified period (30 days from September 12). However, they expressed concern that the process might be swift and unfavorable, especially since the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals rarely grants a stay of deportation for non-citizens.

Khalil, a legal permanent resident, was detained last March at his home in Manhattan and placed in deportation proceedings as part of the Trump administration’s campaign against pro-Palestinian academics.

Israel continues its war on the Gaza Strip since October 2023, which has resulted in the deaths of approximately 64,000 Palestinians and about 163,000 injured. It also conducts repeated airstrikes on several countries in the region, most notably Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Qatar, in addition to its 12-day war on Iran.
