Lamine Yamal was withdrawn from Spain’s squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey due to a groin injury treatment, leading to criticism from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

The 18-year-old Barcelona winger, who has already missed five club matches because of this injury, underwent a radiofrequency procedure on Monday, according to RFEF.

“This procedure was conducted without prior notification to the national team’s medical staff, who were informed only through a report received at 10:40 p.m. last night, advising a rest period of 7-10 days,” stated RFEF.

“Given this situation, and always prioritizing the player’s health, safety, and well-being, the Royal Spanish Football Federation has decided to release the player from the current squad.”

Yamal, who has made 23 appearances for Spain, scored six goals and provided six assists in 11 games this season for Barcelona.

Spain leads Group E with 12 points from four matches, having scored 15 goals and conceded none.

They will play against Georgia on Saturday in Tbilisi and host Turkey on Tuesday in Seville.
