Lebanese Council Discusses Sovereignty and Ceasefire

The council is discussing an agenda consisting of ten items, most notably the completion specifically related to extending the sovereignty of the Lebanese state over all its territories with its own forces exclusively, and discussing arrangements for the ceasefire agreement during November 2024, according to the Lebanese National News Agency.

The session was preceded by a bilateral meeting between the President and the Prime Minister, during which they discussed the general situation and developments in the country.

Earlier on Tuesday, informed sources told ‘Sputnik’ that the Lebanese Prime Minister insists on holding the cabinet session on time despite the absence of two ministers. They explained that, pointing out that ministers from the ‘Forces’ and ‘Progressive Socialist’ parties are hinting at escalatory options if the Lebanese government does not set a three-month deadline for ‘Hezbollah’ to hand over its weapons.

‘Hezbollah’ denied what was reported in some Arab media about its readiness to ‘clash’ with the Lebanese state and its refusal to hand over weapons. Meanwhile, Hezbollah’s Secretary-General, Naim Qassem, stressed that ‘Lebanon will not remain,’ calling for ‘unifying the word and working according to a clear national priority.’

By January 26th, it was supposed that, yet Israel did not adhere to the date and maintained its military presence in five strategic points in the south of the country, citing ‘ensuring the protection of northern settlements,’ while continuing to launch attacks on Lebanon from time to time.
