Paris St Germain’s manager, Luis Enrique, believes that forward Ousmane Dembele can surpass his impressive 2024–25 season, when he led PSG to a treble victory and became a top Ballon d’Or contender.

At 28, Dembele stepped out of Kylian Mbappe’s shadow, playing a crucial role in PSG’s Champions League triumph and continuing to shine in the Club World Cup, where PSG secured a second-place finish.

Dembele, with 35 goals and 16 assists last season, kept PSG in the game during last week’s UEFA Super Cup. He assisted Goncalo Ramos’ equalizer in the 94th minute, and new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier was lauded for his penalty shootout heroics against Tottenham Hotspur.

“This season presents a significant challenge for Ousmane. Last year was extraordinary, but I am confident he can elevate his performance,” Luis Enrique commented before Friday’s home match against Angers.

“It’s bold to make such statements about Dembele, yet I believe he has the talent. He’s vital for us, excelling in both attack and defense. He seems content, and I am hopeful this year will be even better.”

Friday’s match will be PSG’s first at Parc des Princes in three months, marking home debuts for Chevalier and defender Illia Zabarnyi.

The club will also showcase their five trophies (Ligue 1, French Cup, Champions League, French Super Cup, and UEFA Super Cup) to their fans.

“Reuniting with our fans at the Parc des Princes after 10 away games is crucial. We’ve missed the stadium and the fans, and their support always makes a difference,” Luis Enrique remarked.

When asked if the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict affected team dynamics, as PSG’s squad now includes Russian goalkeeper Matvei Safonov and Ukrainian defender Zabarnyi, Luis Enrique emphasized football’s unifying power.

“Football unites people and fosters unity, transcending political or economic agendas,” he added.
