“How are you? Guess what!”

This wasn’t the standard way two heads of state usually start a phone conversation, but the situation was anything but ordinary.

While attending the UN General Assembly in New York and hurrying to a meeting from the UN headquarters, French President Emmanuel Macron was surprised to be halted by police. The street was closed due to the motorcade of US President Donald Trump.

So, Macron decided to call.

“I’m waiting in the street because everything is stopped for you,” Macron informed Trump in fluent English, as shown in footage aired by BFMTV and Brut online media.

The phone call didn’t clear the path, so Macron continued on foot to his appointment at the French consulate. He was scheduled to have dinner with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

However, the walk gave him the chance to extend the conversation with Trump, during which Macron expressed a desire to discuss the situation in Gaza, including Qatar’s role.

“The president seized this moment to have a warm and friendly phone call with Donald Trump, updating several international matters,” a French presidential official stated, preferring to remain anonymous.

Trump has been vocal against Macron’s recognition of a Palestinian state at the UN.

Despite this, the two leaders reportedly share a cordial personal relationship, characterized by extended handshakes and Macron’s invitation to Trump for the Notre-Dame cathedral reopening in Paris, even before Macron’s second term began.
