French President Emmanuel Macron stated on Sunday that European leaders plan to question US President Donald Trump regarding the extent of his support for security guarantees for Ukraine, expressing skepticism about Russia’s desire for peace.
Macron made these remarks from his summer residence after participating in a call with other European leaders to align their strategies before some of them accompany Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to a meeting with Trump in Washington on Monday.
Macron emphasized, “Our goal is to present a united front with Europeans and Ukrainians,” and to inquire from the Americans “to what extent” they are willing to support security guarantees for Ukraine in a peace deal.
Regarding Moscow’s stance, he noted, “There is only one state offering a peace that equates to surrender: Russia.”
He further asserted that just as discussions about Ukrainian territory must include Ukraine, there can be “no discussions about European security without Europeans.”
Macron urged European leaders to participate in upcoming summits concerning the Ukraine crisis.
