Renowned Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc has decided to retire from T20 international cricket, opting to focus on his Test and ODI career instead.

“Test cricket has always been my top priority,” stated the 35-year-old, as the T20 World Cup approaches in February-March next year.

“I’ve cherished every moment of playing T20 for Australia, especially the 2021 World Cup,” he shared.

Starc played a crucial role in the team that clinched the title in Dubai that year.

He mentioned, “With upcoming tours like India, the Ashes, and the ODI World Cup in 2027, I believe this decision helps me stay fresh, fit, and at my peak for these important series.”

With 79 T20 international wickets, Starc ranks as Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker, only behind Adam Zampa.

His retirement announcement coincided with Australia’s squad announcement for the upcoming series against New Zealand.

Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg commented, “Allowing new fast bowlers a clear path to next year’s T20 World Cup shows a commitment to team success.”

“Mitch’s decision is crucial to prolonging his Test and ODI career, and we fully support it,” he added.
