Prime Minister Narendra Modi has encouraged Indians to investigate if they have unclaimed deposits or investments, highlighting it as a chance to “turn forgotten financial assets into new opportunities.”
On Wednesday morning, Modi shared a post on X, suggesting many citizens might not realize they have untouched funds for years. He provided a link to a detailed LinkedIn note expanding on data he revealed at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit.
Modi disclosed that Indian banks hold Rs78,000 crore (approximately Dh318 billion) in unclaimed deposits. Unclaimed funds in insurance companies amount to Rs14,000 crore (Dh57 billion), mutual funds Rs3,000 crore (Dh12.24 billion), and Rs9,000 crore (Dh36.73 billion) in dividends remain unclaimed.

“These numbers have surprised many,” Modi noted, emphasizing these sums represent the lifetime savings of numerous families.
To tackle this, the government initiated the ‘Aapki Poonji, Aapka Adhikar — Your Money, Your Right’ program in October 2025, designed to assist citizens in identifying and recovering their funds. Modi pointed out that portals from the RBI, IRDAI, SEBI, and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs now enable individuals to trace unclaimed deposits, insurance, mutual funds, and dividends transparently and efficiently.
By December 2025, 477 districts had facilitated camps in both urban and rural areas of India.
Coordinated efforts by the government, regulatory bodies, banks, and financial institutions have already returned nearly Rs2,000 crore (Dh8.16 billion) to rightful owners.
Modi urged quick action from citizens to verify if they have unclaimed assets, utilize official portals, and attend facilitation camps in their areas. The aim is to broaden the initiative’s reach, allowing more people to reclaim their rightful assets.
“Your money is yours. Let’s ensure it returns to you,” he stated, describing the effort as a move towards a more transparent and financially empowered India.
