Morocco made history by becoming the first Arab nation to clinch the Under-20 World Cup title, defeating Argentina 2-0 in Sunday’s final in Santiago.
Yassir Zabiri scored the opening goal in the 12th minute with a stunning free kick and extended Morocco’s lead 17 minutes later with a precise close-range shot.
Argentina, the record holders with six titles, faced their second final defeat after losing to Brazil in 1983.
Despite being the favorites, Argentina, with their six titles, had only lost one final before, while Morocco was playing their first-ever final.
Moreover, the Albiceleste had secured victories in all six matches, netting 15 goals and conceding just two, while the Atlas Cubs had suffered a loss to Mexico and only advanced past France on penalties.
The unexpected unfolded early at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos in Santiago. Zabiri broke through, deftly chipped the ball over Santino Barbi, and was brought down by the Argentine goalkeeper.
Morocco called for a red card and penalty, but after a VAR review, a yellow card and a free kick were awarded. The Atlas Cubs’ dismay was brief, as Zabiri elegantly curled the free kick into the top corner.
Diego Placente’s team quickly attacked, but Ouahbi’s squad countered effectively to increase the lead. Ismael Baouf regained possession impressively and passed to Othmane Maamma, whose cross was powerfully volleyed by Zabiri.
Shortly after the restart, Morocco nearly scored again when Zabiri outsmarted his defender and narrowly missed from outside the box. Argentina replied with substitute Ian Subiabre shooting over after a skillful play from Gianluca Prestianni.
Despite Argentina dominating possession and earning several corners, the impeccable defense from Baouf, Fouad Zahouani, and others kept them from troubling goalkeeper Ibrahim Gomis. The final whistle set off jubilant celebrations among the Moroccan players.
