The media reported that a massive and unknown stick insect was found in the misty forests of far northern Queensland, believed to be the heaviest insect in Australia. The report noted that entomologists who went on the search discovered a female of this insect at an altitude of about 900 meters. They then found two more. The report quoted researcher Cook Emmet as saying, “We studied her eggs after she laid several, and we were then finally sure that it is a new species.” Emmet added that the insect previously considered the heaviest in Australia was the giant burrowing cockroach, which weighs no more than 30 grams.
