Nolan Praises Dwayne Johnson’s Stellar Performance

Christopher Nolan recently lauded Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s performance in ‘The Smashing Machine,’ deeming it one of the year’s finest.

As reported by Variety, Nolan, during a chat on ‘The Director’s Cut’ podcast with the film’s director Benny Safdie, described Johnson’s portrayal of MMA fighter Mark Kerr as “heartbreaking” and “incredible.”

“It’s an astounding performance,” Nolan remarked. “You won’t find a better one this year or in most years.”

The Oppenheimer director, who collaborated with Safdie on his Oscar-winning film, also expressed admiration for Safdie’s latest work.

“Congrats on the film. It’s a truly remarkable and groundbreaking piece that will gain appreciation over time. I’m proud to know you,” Nolan commented, as per Variety.

During their exchange, Nolan humorously teased Safdie about casting actors for The Smashing Machine while filming Oppenheimer, which featured Emily Blunt, also appearing in The Smashing Machine as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples.

“I heard you were scouting actors for your film when you should have been memorizing lines on my set,” Nolan joked to Safdie. “I didn’t realize it then, but it seems to have worked out well for you.”

Directed by Safdie, The Smashing Machine explores the rise and challenges of ex-UFC fighter Mark Kerr, highlighting his addiction struggles and their impact on his life. The film earned Safdie the Best Director award at the Venice Film Festival but only grossed $10 million domestically against a $50 million budget, according to Variety.

Johnson, on his part, has spoken about the profound impact of the role on him. Following the film’s release, he stated: “I was honored to transform for my director, Benny Safdie. Thank you, brother, for your trust. This film changed my life. With deep gratitude, respect, and radical empathy.”
