Oats: A Breakfast Choice for Weight Loss

Oats are a common dish in breakfast meals because they contain many nutrients that help promote weight loss by increasing the feeling of fullness. According to a study published in the medical journal “Health,” oats have three properties that contribute to weight loss, as follows:

Oatmeal is a good source of “beta-glucan,” a type that mixes with water to form a gel-like substance in the digestive system. This helps to feel full for a longer period, which contributes to weight control. Soluble fibers also play a role in regulating blood sugar and reducing it. One study found that people who ate oatmeal for breakfast felt fuller and were less likely to snack afterward.

The glycemic index measures the effect of food on blood sugar levels. The higher the index, the greater the effect on blood sugar. Oatmeal has a low glycemic index, which means it provides a slow and steady release of energy. This can help stabilize blood sugar and reduce food cravings.

The fiber in oatmeal helps regulate bowel movements and supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria that may help protect against obesity. However, more research on humans is needed to confirm these results. The method of preparing oatmeal may affect its nutritional value, which in turn may affect your weight loss goals.

The study noted that many ready-made oatmeal packages contain added sugar, up to 12 grams or more per package. This adds calories and thus increases weight without any significant health benefits. Scientists recommend consuming one cup of cooked oats (about 150 calories) in the morning, which allows for adding more calories from protein or seeds to help you feel full.
