The spokesperson for the Palestinian presidency, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, stated in a statement reported by the official news agency ‘Wafa’ on Thursday that the relevant Palestinian authorities have delivered the first batch of weapons in the Burj al-Barajneh and al-Buss camps. He noted that this process will be completed gradually in other camps.
Abu Rudeineh explained that this measure comes as an implementation of the joint statement issued on May 21st after the meeting between Abbas and Aoun in Beirut, which confirmed the commitment of both parties to enhance cooperation between them and the exclusivity of weapons in the hands of the Lebanese state.
He added that both sides agreed to form a joint committee to follow up on the situation in the camps and improve the living conditions of Palestinian refugees, ensuring them a dignified life without affecting the right of return or national identity. He affirmed that the goal is to achieve a stable security situation with full coordination between Lebanese and Palestinian agencies.
Earlier, Palestinian sources had mentioned that the Lebanese army has already begun receiving a batch of weapons and ammunition from the Burj al-Barajneh camp in Beirut, in the presence of representatives from the Palestinian National Security.
This development comes within the framework of Lebanese-Palestinian understandings to end the issue within the camps, which has been a subject of internal debate for decades, amid a joint confirmation that the era of weapons outside the authority of the Lebanese state has ended.
