During his speech at the annual conference of the ‘Brothers of Italy’ party in the Italian capital, Rome, he explained that a fully sovereign Palestinian state would be a stabilizing factor and a responsible partner in maintaining security and making peace, not a burden on anyone, according to Palestinian news agency ‘Wafa.’ Abbas affirmed the Palestinian aspiration to live freely and with dignity in a modern democratic state based on pluralism, equality, and the rejection of violence, noting that the recognition of Palestine by states reflects a conviction that it is an investment in the future of peace.
He stressed that parliamentary and presidential elections will be held within a year after the end of the war in Gaza, confirming that the absence of an independent Palestinian state represents a historical and fundamental injustice to regional instability.
The agreement came into effect on October 10, 2025, and on the 13th of the same month, U.S. President Donald Trump, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a declaration on establishing a ceasefire in Gaza. Under the agreement, the movement released the 20 who remained alive since the events of October 7, 2023, in exchange for Israel releasing about 2,000 Palestinian detainees from Gaza, including those sentenced to long terms.
