Commenting on the Polish authorities’ statements that Ukraine has no chance of joining the European Union if the authorities in Kyiv do not agree to exhume the bodies of the victims of the Volyn Massacre, Ulyanov wrote on the “X” platform: “The problem is that the Volyn Massacre was committed by Bandera’s followers, who are now officially national heroes in Ukraine.”
In the summer of 2016, the lower house of the Polish parliament adopted a resolution recognizing July 11 as a national day to commemorate the victims of the genocide committed by Ukrainian ultra-nationalists against the inhabitants of the Second Polish Republic during 1943-1945.
According to the Polish side, the mass killings during 1939-1945 were committed by the supporters of the Ukrainian Nationalists Organization “Ukrainian Insurgent Army” against the Polish population in Volyn, Eastern Galicia, and neighboring areas.
In 2017, Ukraine imposed a ban on the search and exhumation of bodies in response to the demolition of a memorial for the “Ukrainian Insurgent Army” in the Polish city of Hrushovychi.
Earlier, the Polish authorities repeatedly stated that they would block Ukraine’s accession to the European Union if the Kyiv authorities do not agree to exhume the victims of the Volyn Massacre.
