According to a study conducted by Harvard University, about 27% of women suffer from weak and brittle nails. This condition can result from simple daily factors such as continuous exposure to water and detergents or the use of harsh nail polish removers. However, it may sometimes conceal more serious health issues, according to ‘Times of India.’
Common factors that lead to brittle nails include frequent washing, exposure, and aging. It can also be associated with hypothyroidism, which causes slow nail growth along with symptoms like weight gain, or Raynaud’s syndrome, which impairs blood circulation in the fingers, leading to thinning nails.
To prevent this, experts recommend adopting a daily nail care routine that includes consistently moisturizing the hands, wearing gloves when using detergents, and avoiding excessive use of artificial nails or harsh nail polish removers. Doctors emphasize that treating the root causes, such as addressing iron deficiency or regulating thyroid function, is the best way to restore nail health. However, they caution that improvement may take months as new, stronger, and healthier nails grow.
