According to ‘tomorrowsworldtoday’, this significant achievement serves as a bridge connecting biological systems and quantum technology. Researchers affirm that the new quantum protein functions as a quantum sensor capable of detecting subtle changes within biological processes. The team’s approach was based on developing a qubit from a biological system rather than trying to adapt a conventional quantum sensor to a biological environment.

David Awschalom, a co-lead researcher, stated, “Instead of taking a traditional quantum sensor and trying to camouflage it to enter a biological system, we wanted to explore the idea of using the biological system itself and developing it into a qubit.” Researchers believe that, one day, cells might be able to build qubit proteins directly, which would be stronger than current quantum sensors.

Peter Maurer, another co-lead researcher, said, “Our results not only open new avenues for quantum sensing within living systems but also offer a radically different approach to designing quantum materials. Specifically, we can now begin using nature’s tools of evolution and self-assembly to overcome some of the obstacles faced by current quantum technology.”
