The committee clarified that the three researchers were awarded the prize for their discovery of the phenomenon of quantum tunneling at a macroscopic level and the quantization of energy in an electrical circuit. This phenomenon is also known as ‘quantum tunneling.’ Determining the maximum size of a system that can display the effects of ‘quantum mechanics’ is one of the main issues in physics.
According to the committee, ‘the scientists’ research paved the way for the development of the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum encryption, quantum computers, and quantum sensors.’
Last year, the prize was awarded to British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton and American John Hopfield for their research since the 1980s in the field of artificial neural networks, which paved the way for the development of contemporary artificial intelligence.
The Nobel Prize consists of a certificate, a gold medal, and a check for 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.17 million). The winners were Mary E. Bronco, Fred Ramsdale from America, and Japanese Shimon Sakaguchi.
The announcement also includes the winners of the prizes in chemistry, literature, peace, and economics.
