Estimates suggest that a child is born using these technologies every 35 seconds, reflecting the immense progress in this field, according to ‘Medical Express’. In vitro fertilization, which involves fertilizing the egg with sperm outside the body, remains the most common technique among assisted reproductive technologies (ART).
An international team of researchers collected data from 101 countries to estimate the total number, showing that between 10 to 13 million children were born by 2018, with an additional 3 to 4 million children between 2018 and 2023. These estimates, although approximate, are based on the strongest available data, making them the most accurate so far.
The data indicates that Europe leads with about 3.6 to 4.5 million children born using IVF, followed by Asia with between 3 to 4 million, and then North America with about 1.4 to 1.6 million children. This rapid growth, which began at the start of the 21st century, reflects technological advancements and the widespread adoption of these technologies.
These figures highlight the importance of addressing infertility challenges, with ongoing scientific research aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of these technologies and making them more widely accessible.
