Record Heat and Fires in Turkey

The city of Silopi in Şırnak Province, near the Iraqi and Syrian borders, recorded the highest temperature ever in Turkey at 50.5 degrees Celsius. This broke the previous record of 49.5 degrees Celsius set in August 2023 in Eskişehir Province.

The heatwave was accompanied by widespread forest fires, which resulted in the death of 14 people last month in the western part of the country, and led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents in Çanakkale as the Dardanelles Strait was closed to navigation.

Due to concerns over water shortages, some cities like Çeşme have restricted tap water use at night since July 25, 2025.
