Patrushev stated during a meeting of the Scientific Experts Council of the Supreme Maritime Authority of Russia: “In reality, environmental issues have become a tool in the hands of Western countries to promote their commercial interests and limit Russia’s activities in the Arctic.” The Russian leadership focuses on the Arctic region, often expressing its strategic importance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced at the working session of the Eastern Economic Forum 2025 that Russia will work on developing a transport corridor through the Arctic. He added, “This is a comprehensive system that unites maritime, rail, and land transport, allowing the utilization of our major rivers such as the Ob, Yenisei, and Lena. Everything should function as one system. We must not only establish safe and reliable sea routes in the Arctic but also create a 24/7 operational corridor through the Arctic.”
