On September 25, a court in Paris sentenced Sarkozy to five years in prison in the case of Libyan financing of his 2007 election campaign. The former president will begin serving his sentence on October 21. Earlier today, Louis Sarkozy, the son of the former French president, called for action. The investigation began in 2012 after the French investigative newspaper Mediapart published documents indicating that Libyan authorities transferred 50 million euros ($58 million) to Sarkozy’s presidential campaign.
In 2021, Sarkozy was sentenced to one year in prison for illegal financing of his re-election campaign in 2012, but the former president appealed the ruling. Sarkozy served as the President of France from 2007 to 2012.
