The newly opened Independence Square in Sharjah is creating buzz among residents and businesses, as the area has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent months.

Situated at the city’s center, the square features a 34-meter monument topped with a seven-pointed star and was officially inaugurated this week by Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah and Supreme Council Member. However, locals and traders have been witnessing the changes unfold for several months.

During a visit by Khaleej Times, residents highlighted freshly painted buildings, modern pavements, new shop signage, and crisp white road markings that have revitalized the neighborhood’s appearance.

Abdul Kareem, a 12-year resident and mobile shop owner, remarked that this transformation is the most significant he’s seen in the area.

“Everything looks brand new. All the buildings are painted in beige, shops have new signage, and even the roads appear renewed. It’s like a different place,” he said.

“Walking on the footpath now feels organized and new. The footpaths are looking great,” he added.

The beige facades covering around two dozen buildings near the square are among the most striking changes.

Shop owners were impressed by the rapid transformation leading up to UAE’s National Day celebrations. The government replaced almost all shop signs around the square with uniform beige-and-black designs.

Mohammed Faizal, who owns a sweet shop, noted that the signage upgrade happened swiftly. “One day the old signs were there, and within a few days, we were informed about the new ones. Now every sign matches in color and design, looking smart and appealing,” he said, noting that customers have praised the improved appearance even before entering the shop.

Traders reported that redevelopment started months ago, beginning with building repainting and facade upgrades, followed by road enhancements and new shop signage installations.

Rajesh Kumar, an electronics shop owner, mentioned that while the work caused some noise and dust, the outcome was worthwhile.

“For months, we saw workers repainting, repairing, and upgrading things step by step. Now, seeing the completed square fills us with pride. It has given the area a fresh, new look,” he said.
