What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, and bowel movement disturbances such as constipation or diarrhea.
Although the exact causes are not precisely defined, IBS may be linked to a dysfunction in the gut-brain axis, disturbances in the intestinal microbiome, mild infections, or issues with the intestinal barrier.
This disorder results in an imbalance of gut bacteria, decreased bowel movement, and increased inflammatory substances. Additionally, the reduced secretion of the hormone melatonin, which supports health, exacerbates the situation.
The study emphasizes that reducing permanent night shifts may help lower the risk of developing IBS, especially among individuals with a high body mass index, highlighting the need to promote a healthy lifestyle to mitigate the negative effects of night work.
