Study Shows Benefits of Quitting Smoking After 40

The study tracked about 4,700 smokers who quit after the age of 40, compared to a similar group of smokers who continued smoking, according to Medical News Today.

Researchers explained that each additional year after quitting reduces the risk by equivalent to 3 to 4 months and slows the deterioration of speech ability by 6 months compared to ongoing smokers.

The study, whose results align with previous research, confirmed that smokers who quit after the age of 65 have cognitive abilities close to non-smokers after years of quitting.

Researchers explained that smoking negatively affects blood vessels, reducing oxygen flow which increases the risks of memory loss and dementia. On the other hand, quitting smoking helps improve circulation and increase oxygen supply, reducing cognitive decline.
