“Man of Steel” is set for a return, but this time, he won’t be the sole star.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn has unveiled new insights into the sequel to his summer hit, titled ‘Man of Tomorrow,’ which is slated to start filming in April 2026.
In a recent interview, Gunn explained that the narrative will not solely focus on Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet. Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will also play a significant role.
“It’s a tale of Lex Luthor and Superman needing to collaborate against a much larger threat,” Gunn stated. “And it’s more complex than that. It’s as much a Lex film as it is a Superman film. Sadly, I find myself relating to Lex.”

The writer-director also mentioned that the script is nearly complete. “Although I’m crafting the Superman sequel that we will begin filming around April… I’m mostly done writing it,” Gunn noted.
The renowned director further hinted at the future of his so-called ‘Superman Saga’ during a chat with The Hollywood Reporter at the ‘Peacemaker’ season two premiere.
He mentioned, “I’ve already completed the treatment for the upcoming story in what I refer to as the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is finalized, which indicates a thoroughly developed outline. I’m working on it and hope to start production soon.”
‘Man of Tomorrow’ is set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. Prior to that, DC Studios has two major releases: Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie, on June 26, 2026, and Clayface, directed by James Watkins, on September 11, 2026.
