This visit marks the first of its kind by a Syrian official of this level in a quarter-century. Al-Shaibani is discussing several important issues with American officials, most notably the lifting of the remaining sanctions on Syria and the proposed security agreement with Israel.
American media reported that arrangements are underway for a bilateral meeting between President Donald and Al-Shaibani on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings scheduled for September 22-30.
President Al-Sharaa is set to participate in the 80th session of the General Assembly, becoming the first Syrian president to speak at the international organization since 1967 and the first ever to participate in the high-level week of the General Assembly.
This diplomatic move comes as part of the regional and international support that the transitional authority in Damascus has enjoyed since coming to power. President Al-Sharaa had previously met with his American counterpart in Riyadh on May 14, following his visit to Paris and the reception by French President Emmanuel Macron.
