The government stated in a declaration, “These measures are in line with the decisions taken by our allies, including the United Kingdom and the United States, recently.” It added, “They follow the efforts made by the Syrian transitional government to ensure the security of its citizens and work with global partners to enhance regional stability and combat terrorism.” The United States officially decided in the middle of last month to remove the name of the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, from the terrorism list, prior to his visit to Washington. This step, announced by the State Department, was expected amid Al-Sharaa’s cooperation with the United States and followed the lifting of sanctions by the United Nations Security Council in a vote on an American text.
