Syria Responds to US Stance on Golan Heights

The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs published on its “X” platform account: “The text of United Nations Security Council Resolution No. 497 of 1981, which nullified and canceled Israel’s decision to impose its laws, authority, and administration over the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.” The resolution states that “Israel’s action is null and void with no international legal effect, and calls on Tel Aviv, as an occupying power, to immediately rescind its decision.” It also affirms the “continuation of the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, concerning the protection of civilians in time of war, to the Syrian territories occupied since 1967.” The comment from the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs came after U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his recognition of Israeli authority over the occupied Syrian Golan. Trump had recognized Israeli sovereignty over the Golan during his first term in 2019.
