The report published by the newspaper added that “Syria will issue new banknotes, removing two zeros from them, in an attempt to restore confidence in the Syrian pound which has significantly decreased in value.” The British newspaper reported in May, citing sources, that the new Syrian authorities, after easing international sanctions, plan to issue banknotes in Germany and the United Arab Emirates rather than in Russia.
In the last years of Assad’s rule, inflation increased in the country, which was strangled by sanctions and worsened with the arrival of the armed opposition to power.
