The Syrian news agency SANA reported that Al-Shara will hold official talks at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump, in a move that reflects a notable shift in relations between Damascus and Washington after years of estrangement and sanctions.
According to the White House briefing team, Trump will discuss with Al-Shara the issue of Syria joining the international coalition to combat the terrorist organization ISIS (banned in Russia and several other countries).
The team clarified that the visit has a symbolic nature and may indicate a potential shift in Washington’s policy towards Damascus after years of division. It is noteworthy that Al-Shara made an official visit to the Russian capital, Moscow, on October 15th, where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed military and investment cooperation and prospects. Russia affirmed its readiness to support Damascus in strengthening its sovereignty and rebuilding its infrastructure after years of conflict.
