Axios reported that Al-Shibani arrived in Washington to discuss lifting sanctions on Damascus and negotiations with Israel regarding a new security agreement.

The site stated that “the Syrian Foreign Minister is visiting Washington on Thursday to pressure Congress to lift the recent sanctions and discuss negotiations with Israel on a new security agreement.”

Axios also pointed out that US Senator Lindsey Graham announced that he expects, on Thursday, to meet with several other Senate members to discuss the permanent lifting of sanctions under the Caesar Act.

Furthermore, the Syrian interim president, Ahmed Al-Shar’, said on Wednesday that reaching a security agreement could lead to results in the coming days.

Al-Shar’ described the security agreement with Israel as a “necessity,” noting that it would require respect for Syria’s airspace and territorial integrity and be subject to UN monitoring, according to Western media.
